Need Recommendations for a Cool-Running SSD

I recently had issues with my P44 Pro, which developed the SLC cache bug after two years, and I ended up getting a refund. Since Solidigm no longer makes it, I'm on the hunt for a new SSD that can operate cool without a heatsink, ideally around 60-65°C under heavy loads. My ambient temperature ranges from 25-32°C.

I've browsed several SSDs, but I keep stumbling upon firmware problems. For instance, the 990 Pro has had issues with health degradation (though this was reportedly fixed with an update, performance might still not be as good). The WD SN850x seems to run hot and had some BSOD issues on Windows 24H2, which was also addressed via firmware. Then there's the SK Hynix Platinum P41, which had similar problems to the P44 pro but supposedly resolved by firmware, although I remain skeptical.

These are some top-tier PCIe 4.0 options I've found, but I also came across the Lexar NM790 2TB and Samsung 850 Pro 2TB. If you've used any of these SSDs, did the firmware updates resolve the problems for you? Or would you recommend one of the alternatives I mentioned? Thanks for any insights!

Honestly, the 990 Pro and SN850X run pretty hot, and I'd say a heatsink is essential. If you're looking for something cooler, you might want to explore PCIe 3.0 drives instead.

I just set up a build with the Patriot Viper VP4300 Lite 1TB M.2 Gen 4 SSD. While it does run a bit hot in the 60-70°C range—5°C above your preference—it comes with a heatsink on top. You could also add your own for better cooling. Moreover, Patriot is pretty affordable for the performance you get with 1-2TB drives.

I've tried a bunch of the SSDs you've mentioned: the 990 Pro, WD SN850X, and Lexar NM790—all updated to the latest firmware. With my typical setup and six intake fans, they’ve been working okay. Ambient temperature at around 27°C gives:
- WD: 48°C idle, up to 59°C on heavy load.
- Samsung: 44°C (Nand) / 49°C (Controller) idle; peaks at 50°C (Nand) / 62°C (Controller).
- Lexar tends to run a bit hotter: 34°C (Nand) / 39°C (Controller) idle, and up to 66°C (Nand) / 53°C (Controller) under load. So, while they're all functional, keep in mind the temperatures.
