New to IT and Need Guidance on Managing Unused Windows Laptops

Hey everyone! I've recently taken on the role of IT guy in my company because the previous one left, and they haven't filled the position yet. My background is primarily in Linux/Unix as a Senior DevOps engineer, so I'm a bit out of my element when it comes to Windows systems. Currently, I'm trying to understand the best way to handle some laptops that aren't in use. Should these laptops be registered with Intune? I found that when I try to remove unused laptops from Intune, I end up getting locked out since they communicate with Entra. I'm not sure if I should create local accounts for these machines or if there's a better approach. Any advice on best practices would be greatly appreciated!

First off, if the laptops aren’t in use, it's best to leave them registered with Intune. If you remove them from Intune, they get deleted from Entra ID too, which can lock you out. If they’re just spares, consider keeping them managed and stored safely. When you do need to use them, you'll want to ensure they’re up-to-date and follow the policies, but that's where features like Autopilot come in handy for resets.

Got it! So, leaving them managed is the way to go. Thanks for clarifying how the Intune-Entra relationship works!

Exactly! Autopilot will make reusing those laptops much smoother when the time comes.

Honestly, your priority should be keeping things stable until they hire someone else. If these laptops are not actively being used, I wouldn’t stress too much about managing them right now. Just focus on critical IT tasks while you hold the fort. Encourage management to bring in a specialist—they can help set this up properly once they’re back on track.

Totally agree! It's a tough situation, and your time is better spent on practical issues.

Right! You’ve got enough on your plate without adding unnecessary tasks.
