I'm looking to upgrade my CPU but need some guidance. Here are my current specs:
- CPU: Intel i7-13700k
- Cooler: Thermalright Phantom Spirit
- GPU: RTX 4070Ti
- RAM: 64 GB DDR4-3200
- PSU: Corsair RM750e (750W)
- Storage: 1 TB M.2 SSD for the OS and a 4 TB M.2 SSD for games, plus a 4 TB HDD for files.
I built this PC a few years ago and faced some issues with my CPU, which led to an RMA due to power instability. Even with several BIOS updates, it's overheating and crashing when gaming for more than a few minutes. I'd prefer to switch to an AMD CPU this time.
My main requirements are to keep my existing RAM and storage, while ensuring the new CPU is good for gaming at 1440p. I understand I need to buy a new motherboard, and I'd appreciate any recommendations, but that's not a hard requirement. My budget is flexible. Thanks!

It sounds like your cooler might be the real issue here. Swapping the CPU might not solve your overheating problems. If your cooler is clogged or defective, that could be causing your issues. Since you're looking at AMD, the Ryzen 9 7900X is a solid choice—it competes well with the 13700k in gaming and performance. Just keep in mind you'll need a new motherboard with the AM5 socket, like a B650 or X670.
Also, beware that you'll need to upgrade your RAM to DDR5, since AM5 platforms don’t support DDR4. Ram prices have jumped significantly recently, so you might want to consider a good air cooler as a cheaper alternative before making any big CPU changes.
If you're really keen on staying with AMD, you'd be looking at something like the Ryzen 7 7700X or 7900X for performance on par or better than your current CPU. Just remember that upgrade means new hardware, so it might get pricey with that DDR5 RAM. Still, it could be worth it for the performance gains in your games at 1440p!
Definitely! Just make sure your cooler can handle the new CPU, otherwise you might end up in the same situation as before.

That's a good point about the cooler, and considering an upgrade there first could save you a lot of hassle. When I switched to AMD, I went with the 7900X too, and I've been really happy with it for gaming!
