Hey everyone! I'm new to the IT world and I'm really interested in setting up a homelab to learn about network infrastructure and have a bit of fun along the way. I plan to use Linux for this journey, but I'm feeling a mix of excitement and intimidation with the learning process ahead.

I have a mini desktop that I want to use for running a Minecraft server, and a laptop that I'll take with me to work. The main applications I foresee using on the laptop are Obsidian.md and some additional tools that I'll discover as I go.

So, I'm reaching out to see what Linux distributions you would recommend for my situation. Any advice for a Linux newbie would also be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

First, I'd check what extra hardware you might have lying around alongside your mini desktop. That can really influence your distro choice!

I just have the mini desktop for now. The laptop is my daily driver for work.

You might want to start by checking out some distro selection resources. A quick search can yield tons of information tailored for beginners. Just remember to take backups regularly, play around in a virtual machine, and always understand the command you're about to run!
