Running 4 Slots of DDR5 RAM at 6000MHz: Is It Possible?

I just built a new system featuring an AMD 9900x and an MSI Mag x670e motherboard. I'm using Gskill Flare X5 RAM in a 2x16 configuration at 6000MHz. Sometimes, I hit the 32GB limit of my RAM, so I'm considering upgrading to 4x16GB. I've heard that running 4 slots can lead to instability and may require me to reduce my RAM speed to 4800MHz. My main questions are: Can I run 4x16GB at 6000MHz successfully, or would I likely need to drop speed to 4800MHz? What impact would this have on performance in the long term? Should I just stick with my current 2x16GB setup at 6000MHz instead? Thanks for any advice!

It's generally not likely that 4 sticks will run at 6000MHz well—most of the time, you'd expect DDR5 to drop to about 3600MHz at best, even at 4800MHz isn't a sure bet.

I didn't realize it could drop to 3600MHz. So, how much difference would that make for my usage?

Short answer: No, it's unlikely you'll manage 4x sticks at 6000MHz.

You can get 4 sticks to work, but it might take a lot of tweaking with timings and voltage. Some users have success while others struggle, and it could depend on your motherboard and BIOS. It's not out of the question, but it might cause a headache in the process.

For aesthetics or other reasons, going for 4 sticks isn’t worth it. Focus on getting a 2x32GB setup instead; it’s more reliable and saves you headaches down the line.

It's technically possible to run 4x16GB modules at 6000MHz if you have the right single-rank kits. However, most people don't have those. You're likely better off looking for a 2x32GB kit and selling your current RAM.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might just do that.

If you want 64GB running at 6000MHz, just buy a 2x32GB kit. Mixing and matching often leads to issues with DDR5, so stick with a compatible set to avoid potential problems.

With AMD setup, it’s unlikely you’ll hit 6000MHz unless you slow down to something like 4800MHz. So, it's a risky venture to try with 4 sticks.

Running 4 sticks can overwhelm the memory controller, making it tough to keep 6000MHz stable. If you need 64GB and want 6000MHz, definitely go with 2x32GB instead. With 4x16GB, you're playing a risky game.

Whether or not this will work really comes down to luck with the memory controller in your CPU. There's a chance it could work, but it probably won't be guaranteed. If you're looking for reliability at 6000MHz, I'd advise sticking with 2 sticks.
