I have an Intel i5-12400F and an RX 7900 XT setup. I'm considering fully transitioning to Linux for gaming to avoid the bloat and ads that come with Windows. From what I've seen, Linux boots up using about 600 to 700 MB of RAM, compared to Windows which can use 3 to 4 GB even after cleaning up. I'm aiming for a smooth single-player gaming experience on Linux while keeping Windows for my professional software and multiplayer gaming to avoid anti-cheat issues. I'm planning to dual boot with separate SSDs for each OS. I'm really interested in your experiences with gaming on Linux and would love your recommendations for gaming-specific distros. If you're looking for a solid Linux gaming experience, Cachy OS is a great choice. It's Arch-based and optimized for gaming, so you might find some terminal use in the beginning. But once set up, it runs efficiently, hovering around 1.5 GB of RAM at idle. My gaming has been smooth on Steam, but be prepared for some shader caching when you launch non-Linux games. If you’d prefer something simpler, try Bazzite or POP_OS, which require less terminal work.
I’ve had good luck with Linux Mint on my Optiplex setup. I even set up a server to run Windows in a VM for my office tasks. As for gaming, it's been fantastic! For your setup, I recommend Fedora with the GNOME desktop, and definitely check out Heroic Game Launcher alongside Steam.
