Seeking Opinions on Documenting Cybersecurity Learnings for Beginners

Hey everyone! I've been working in cybersecurity for nearly two years while in college, and to be honest, it felt a lot like being a lost boat in the ocean at times. I've learned a lot, but I also spent time figuring out if I was going in the right direction. Now, I've secured a junior role in a well-known multinational company, starting after July 2026, and I really want to use my free time to document my learnings. My goal is to help beginners not feel as overwhelmed as I did when I started. I'm not claiming to be an expert; I just want to share my experiences, lessons, and insights as I go. Before I dive in, I have a couple of questions: 1. Do you think this kind of documentation would actually help beginners? 2. Is there anything you wish you had understood better when you first started? I'd love to hear your honest thoughts!

You totally should create your own custom list! There's a website called roadmap.sh/cyber-security that has a lot of useful information. You might find it helpful to fill in any gaps from your own experience with your unique take on things, especially since practical understanding is key in this field.

Two years ago, I would have found this super helpful! When I first started, I had no clear path or mentor to guide me. I just jumped around random videos and blogs, trying to piece things together. The real issue wasn't the lack of resources but the confusion about what really mattered and what to learn next. It was tough figuring out how everything connected. Filling that gap you're aiming for could really make a difference for new folks trying to find their way!

Congrats on the new job! If you have interesting stories or insights from your experiences, those are always valuable for newcomers. Cybersecurity is such a broad field with various niches, so if you have even small contributions, go ahead and write them down. Starting with a bullet point list can help you not just now but also for your future CV. It’s interesting that you haven’t come across a good article that already does this. It might be worth checking out some existing resources along with your own insights!
