Hi everyone,
I'm transitioning into the IT field and I'm eager to get more hands-on experience while I continue learning. With about five years of experience in operations and management, mainly in customer-facing and administrative roles, I've recently focused on enhancing my technical skills.
Currently, I'm gaining experience with Microsoft 365 tools like Entra ID, Intune, Teams Admin, Exchange, and Defender. I'm really keen on keeping up that momentum and I'm particularly interested in remote volunteer opportunities where I could assist with IT support, systems administration tasks, or general tech-related projects. My wife and I have recently relocated to Japan for her job, and we're in a rural area with the nearest major city being five hours away.
My main goals are to:
* Build practical experience beyond labs and simulations
* Connect with professionals already in IT
* Contribute meaningfully while also sharpening my skills
If anyone knows of any organizations, nonprofits, or small businesses that might need remote IT help, even if it's short-term, I would greatly appreciate any leads or advice. I'm excited to assist remotely, learn along the way, and help out wherever I can.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this; I really appreciate any guidance or recommendations!

Have you thought about contributing to open source projects? Many larger projects look for QA or other non-programming roles which could help you build skills while being productive. It’s not exactly sysadmin work, but it’s still something IT-related and can help you connect with the community.
Look on GitHub for active projects where you can contribute. Find ones with issues that need fixing and send in pull requests. Just remember, organizations usually won’t give random volunteers access to their systems, especially if they already have IT staff.
It's great that you're looking to volunteer, but I’d be cautious about it. A lot of volunteer IT roles can be pretty thankless, and you might find that the experience isn’t as meaningful as you hope. Many organizations that accept volunteer help often have challenging environments where you won’t gain really useful skills for career advancement. Instead, you might want to focus on completing some IT certifications like Cisco's or AWS’s. Those could help you land better roles that will actually count toward your career progression! Plus, finding volunteer roles in rural Japan can be tough, so considering jobs outside tech to eventually relocate might be a solid plan.
