I'm looking to shift my career toward infrastructure or operations roles, and I recently received an offer for a 'Cloud Engineer' position. However, after doing some research, it seems this role leans more towards being a Platform Engineer, where I'll be involved with our Internal Developer Portal (IDP) powered by Backstage. This involves researching new developer tools, supporting pipelines, and modernizing the onboarding process for application teams.
Since I don't have connections in this area, I'm reaching out to hear from anyone experienced in this field about a few things:
1. Am I narrowing my opportunities by taking this role? How relevant are the skills I'll gain here to other DevOps positions?
2. How challenging is it to get application teams to adapt to a platform like this?
3. Is this a growing trend in enterprise app deployment, or is it just a niche approach that only select companies are adopting?
