I'm looking to upgrade my RAM to a total of 32GB. Currently, I have 2 sticks of 8GB running in dual channel configuration. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it to spend an extra $30 for 2 sticks of 16GB, or if I should just get 2 more sticks of the same 8GB I already have. I've seen some old advice online, but I'm curious if things have changed recently regarding RAM configurations.

If you can get the 2x8GB and easily return it if it doesn't work, go for it! I’ve used 4x8GB with no issues in the past, but 2x16GB tends to give you fewer headaches.
Honestly, if you're trying to save some cash, just stick with the 2x8GB option. DDR4 is pretty efficient, and you won't notice a huge difference unless you're pushing your system hard.
2x16GB will provide better performance overall as opposed to 4x8GB. While it might be a bit pricier, it's a solid investment for better longevity.
Replacing your existing RAM with two sticks is preferable for maintaining dual channel performance. Better to have two than four sticks in this case.
Going for the 2x16GB is definitely the better choice. You’ll have more flexibility with RAM expansion in the future if you decide to upgrade again.
