Should I buy a 5080 now or hold off?

I'm currently stuck playing games on a pretty terrible laptop with a Ryzen 7 5700U, and it's really limiting my gaming experience. I've been thinking about upgrading to a new PC, specifically looking at getting a 5080, but I'm torn on whether I should buy one now or wait it out. I've noticed that prices have been climbing—like just the other day, an ASUS Prime OC went from $1319.99 to $1399.99 on Newegg. With all the tariff uncertainty, I'm worried they might just keep going up. I'd love some advice on if it's worth purchasing now or if I should hold off for a better price!

Honestly, it's anyone's guess what will happen with prices. Even the experts seem to be confused about the current market. So I don't think there's a solid answer to your question.

Unfortunately, I think GPU prices will keep rising. The trend is leaning towards companies putting more resources into AI rather than consumer GPUs, which means less supply for us. History has shown that cryptomining brought GPU prices down before, but now with AI being more prominent, the outlook isn’t great for gamers. Best to buy what you can afford sooner rather than later!

If your only option is a $2500+ PC, I would look into midrange options like the 5070. It would definitely be a huge leap from your Ryzen 7 5700U and might save you some cash while still giving you a solid upgrade.

I managed to snag a 5080 recently for around $1275 by getting it open box from Amazon, and I think prices will start to drop a bit more. There seems to be an uptick in supply now, so if you wait a little while, you could grab one at a near MSRP price. Just keep an eye on it!

It's really hard to predict with everything happening right now, especially with tariffs in play. But typically, prices do come down eventually; it just might take some time—maybe a few months.
