I'm building my first gaming PC and have everything except the graphics card and power supply. The system will use a Ryzen 7 5800X and 32GB of DDR4 RAM, paired with a 1080p 144Hz monitor. I'm deciding between a used RTX 3080 10GB for £300 or a used RTX 4070 12GB for £450. Both cards are listed in excellent condition, and I've asked the sellers for multiple photos.
I don't currently plan to upgrade to a 1440p monitor, so I'm worried that the RTX 4070 might be overkill at 1080p and that I wouldn't use its full potential. I'll be playing a wide range of games, including demanding AAA titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, as well as newer and older releases.
The main issue is timing: I could buy the RTX 3080 now, or wait about two weeks for the RTX 4070 and hope it hasn't sold. Which would be the better choice for performance, longevity, and value?

At 1080p and 144Hz, the RTX 3080 will handle gaming very comfortably, and £300 is a strong price if the card is in good condition. Since you don’t plan to upgrade your monitor, the cheaper option makes the most financial sense. Either card would be more than capable for your current setup.
Make sure to consider the power supply and the condition of each used card. The RTX 3080 uses noticeably more power and can run hotter, so it needs a decent-quality PSU and good case airflow. The RTX 4070 is much more efficient and easier to cool. I’d choose the 4070 for longevity, but only if the seller and warranty situation are trustworthy; otherwise, the £300 3080 is a sensible buy.
I’d lean toward the RTX 4070 if you can afford the extra £150. It has newer architecture, better efficiency, improved upscaling features, and 12GB of VRAM. Even at 1080p, those advantages can matter in demanding games with ray tracing or maximum settings, and the extra headroom may help it stay useful longer.

The RTX 3080 still has plenty of performance for the next few years if you’re happy to reduce a few settings. The 4070 is the better long-term card, but the 3080 is the better value at that price.
