I'm gearing up for a new build that will mainly be for gaming, but I'll also use it for development tasks and running virtual machines. I was all set to order the 9950X3D since the price dropped to around €650 in Europe, which is a pretty good deal compared to its original €769 launch price. But then I saw ASRock's press release about full BIOS support for the 'newly launched Ryzen 9 9950X3D2', which AMD hasn't even officially announced yet. This press release is still up, and it's not the first time we've heard leaks about this CPU. ASUS even hinted at a '9950X3DV2' in a video, and AMD is rumored to be hinting at a launch soon.
The new model is supposed to have V-Cache on both CCDs, totaling 192MB of L3, which would be great for my use case since I need all 16 cores, and the current model's asymmetric cache can be inconvenient. However, for pure gaming, AMD mentioned the performance gains are minimal. I'm also left wondering about its cost – there's chatter about a $999 price tag, but it could also be lower. The price of the 9950X3D may drop further once the X3D2 is out. Considering that the zen 6 desktop chips won't be around until 2027, what I choose now will likely hold up for a while.
So here are a couple of questions:
- When do you think the 9950X3D2 will actually launch? Is it just weeks away or are we still months off?
- What do you think it will realistically cost? Is that $999 rumor for real?
- If I do more than just gaming, should I wait or just grab the 9950X3D now while the price is solid?
I'd love to hear your opinions, especially if you're in a similar situation!

Waiting for the next AMD launch seems redundant. If you’ve waited this long and need a new rig, go for the 9950X3D now. There will always be something new around the corner, and you can enjoy gaming while waiting for the next round.
New tech is always on the horizon, but nothing's wrong with enjoying what you have now!
From what I’ve seen, AMD tends to announce prices right before release, so we might be in the dark until launch. The $999 rumor seems a bit steep; I’d guess more around $799-$899 if I had to wager. It's risky to hold out, though!
Exactly! Prices always fluctuate, and sometimes waiting means paying more in the long run if demand spikes.
True, but if you wait a bit and get the X3D2, it might be worth it for your needs!
If you're multitasking and running VMs, the 9950X3D should serve you well for now. The performance gains with the new one might not mean much if you're not strictly gaming. If it's more for productivity, I’d say go for the current model and upgrade later when the prices even out.
Good point! The current chips are still pretty powerful for productivity, after all.
Agreed, waiting for the next gen can feel endless. Just grab the good deal!
Honestly, I’d wait for the X3D2 if you can. The added V-Cache could make a difference for your development tasks and gaming performance might improve slightly even if it’s just a few percent. Plus, it sounds like it’s coming soon, so you won't have to wait too long.
That makes sense! I’d rather have the latest tech since it will probably hold up better over time.
Yeah, and the price drop on the current model could help with the budget!

Exactly! You could be missing out on some good gaming time just by waiting.
