Should I Cap My FPS When Gaming?

I play CS2 and have a 200Hz monitor along with a solid PC that can easily run over 300 FPS. I'm curious if uncapping my FPS would make the game feel smoother compared to keeping it capped at 200 FPS. I've noticed a lot of streamers playing uncapped and their gameplay seems a lot smoother than mine. What do you think?

Go ahead and uncapped, but try it with fast V-Sync to avoid screen tearing. Higher FPS reduces latency which is great! Just remember, higher FPS doesn’t automatically make you a better player, haha.

If you're feeling like the game isn’t smooth enough, make sure you've set your monitor refresh rate correctly. Capping your FPS can help alleviate big performance drops during demanding moments.

I cap my FPS depending on the game. It really depends on the gameplay style. Sometimes it feels smoother when capping with frame generation on, but not all games handle it well. Just see what works for you!

Just a heads up, when you're watching streamers, their gameplay might be streaming at 24, 30, or 60 FPS, which is far lower than your setup. I recommend you try both capped and uncapped settings to figure out what feels better for you!

You really can’t see more than 200 FPS on a 200Hz monitor. It's best to cap slightly lower, like 198 or 199 FPS, to avoid issues since you won’t notice any difference between them.

Uncapping might not necessarily make your gameplay smoother, but it could reduce latency, making your game feel more responsive. Personally, I find that my ideal FPS is usually double my monitor's refresh rate. So even if you can hit 300 FPS, it should help with responsiveness!

That’s interesting! What’s your take on latency differences? Like how much lower is it at 240 FPS compared to something higher? I'm curious about how much it actually impacts gameplay.

Have you considered just trying to uncap it and see for yourself how it feels? Sometimes the best way to know is to experiment a bit!
