Should I choose 1x16GB or 2x8GB RAM for my build?

I'm wrapping up my PC build, but I've just realized I won't have enough budget for 32GB of DDR5 RAM just yet. I know I'll be upgrading soon, but for the time being, should I go for 1x16GB now and then get another identical stick later, or should I opt for 2x8GB sticks? My motherboard is the B650 Eagle AX, so I have four memory slots available. By the way, the single 16GB stick is cheaper too!

Have you considered saving up for 2x16GB instead? Both of your current options might end up costing you more in the long run for a setup that isn't as ideal.

Honestly, getting a second stick later might cost you about the same as just buying the 2x16GB now.

When choosing between one larger stick and two smaller ones, it’s generally better to go with 2x8GB for better performance, assuming they’re the same speed and timing. Adding more sticks like that is usually easier.

I think getting a single stick makes sense for now unless you're up for selling the 8GB sticks in the future, which can be a hassle.

Seriously, resale on 8GB sticks is terrible. I once got a box of them for just ten bucks each!

I personally went with the 1x16GB setup and it worked out well. You should be fine adding another stick later. Just keep in mind that having four sticks won't make it quad channel, it'll still operate in dual channel mode.

If you're on AMD, I’d recommend going with the 1x16GB option. It’ll give you dual channel performance when you add a second stick later, but make sure to get the exact same stick with the same speed and latency for the best results!
