Should I Get a 1440p Main Monitor with 1080p or 1440p as a Second Monitor?

I'm planning to upgrade my setup with a new monitor, specifically a 1440p for my main display. I'm also considering a second monitor for tasks like using Discord and watching YouTube. My question is, how much does the resolution of the second monitor impact CPU and GPU performance? Is it better to go with a 1080p 60Hz display or stick with another 1440p? I have an RTX 3080 and a Ryzen 5600X. Thanks!

I use a setup with a 1440p monitor for gaming and a 4k monitor for movies, and I’ve had no issues with performance. You should be fine either way as long as your use case is similar to mine!

If you mainly use the second monitor for basic tasks like checking Discord, Reddit, etc., you won’t need a lot of GPU power for that. So, either option works fine in that scenario.

As long as you’re not gaming on the second monitor, there’s practically no performance hit from the resolution choice. I faced a similar decision and picked 1440p primarily because 1080p was cheaper, but I don't think it really matters much for everyday use.

When it comes to adding a second monitor, the extra resource draw isn’t something you need to stress over too much. The difference in performance between having a 1080p and a 1440p as your second monitor is pretty negligible. The real concern might be how many applications you're running at once because that can impact performance, but not just the monitor resolution itself.

For apps like Discord, you won't see much difference no matter the resolution. However, if you’re watching YouTube and streaming videos, there might be a teeny bit more load when you're on 1440p versus 1080p, but overall, it shouldn't strain your CPU or GPU significantly.

I used to have two 1440p monitors with a 3080ti, and I never ran into issues with gaming or work. So, if you're going for 1440p, I say go for it! You should be more than good to handle that.
