Should I Get a UPS or a Surge Protector for My New PC?

Hey everyone! After a long break from building PCs, I'm finally gearing up for a new one! I'm using a Ryzen 9800x3d and an RTX 5090 with a Corsair hx1500i power supply. I'm unsure about whether I should invest in an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or if a good surge protector will suffice. I've heard mixed opinions—some swear by getting a UPS, while others say a surge protector will do the job just fine. What do you recommend? Also, if you have suggestions for either a good UPS or surge protector, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

Honestly, if you're in an area with stable electricity, a surge protector might be all you need. It's the bare minimum for protecting your gear. However, if power outages are common where you live, definitely get a UPS to avoid any surprise shutdowns. I've had my surge protector for years, and it’s served me well!

What surge protector do you recommend? I’m on the hunt for a good one!

You should get a UPS if you can handle sudden power interruptions gracefully—it helps prevent data loss. If your power supply is 1500W, I'd recommend looking for a UPS rated at least 300W higher. Surge protectors won’t cover every electrical issue, but they are cheaper and useful for general protection against surges.

Cool, I’ll keep that in mind! Any particular brands of UPS you're leaning towards?

If you need to keep your PC running during brief power outages or want to save your work, definitely go for a UPS. It can give you anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours of backup power, which is super useful. If you’re just looking to protect against surges, though, a solid surge protector would be enough for most users. I've been using one for years without any problems!

Thanks for the insights! Do you have any specific models in mind for surge protectors that you like?

In my experience, if you rely on your PC for important tasks, a UPS is vital. You can save your work during outages, ensuring you aren’t caught off guard. However, for just surge protection, a power strip with surge protection is usually good enough.

Got it! I might go for both then. Any suggestions for a good combo?
