I'm building a new computer and I want to get some advice on sound options. In the past, I had a setup with an MSI Z370 motherboard back in 2016, and I found that the onboard sound just didn't have the depth and impact I wanted. I used to have a Creative Blaster Audigy FX V2, but I've heard mixed opinions since then. It seems like people say a dedicated sound card is better than using onboard audio, and I'm curious if that still holds true today. Has the quality of motherboard sound improved over the years, or is it still worth investing in a dedicated sound card? I'm just using a simple setup with two speakers and a bass, nothing fancy. Thanks for your help!

In general, sound cards haven't been relevant for years. If you're looking for better audio, an external DAC/amp is the way to go, especially one that connects through USB. It'll really give your speakers the boost they need to sound better without breaking the bank.
Honestly, most people have moved away from sound cards. The quality of onboard audio hasn't really improved much, and they often struggle with delivering the power needed for high-end headphones. You might want to think about getting a decent entry-level external DAC and amp instead. I used to have the Schiit Hel+, but there are newer options out now that might suit your needs better. They really boost your audio experience without the hassle of a sound card.
I hear ya, my speakers are pretty basic too, and I’m in the same boat looking for something to upgrade!
Honestly, it sounds like your current audio setup is holding you back. Sound cards are typically unnecessary for average users, and if your speakers aren't great, it might just be time to upgrade those instead. You’d get a more significant improvement than by just adding a sound card.
I've noticed that too! With better speakers, the onboard sound can actually sound decent. But if you're really after that rich sound, a sound card is less and less necessary these days.
Yeah, sound cards are pretty outdated now. With your current speakers, you probably wouldn't notice much of a difference if you got one. Onboard audio is sufficient for most users these days, but if you're after better quality, an external DAC might be the way to go since it connects via USB and gives you cleaner sound.
Exactly! I just went with an external DAC, and it made a huge difference. Way better than any sound card I've tried.
I wouldn’t waste your time on a sound card at this point; they’re all pretty similar in capability now. It might be a good idea to look into better speakers or a good set of headphones to really elevate your audio experience instead.

Do you have any specific DAC recommendations? I only have basic speakers, like Altec Lansing, and I'm not looking for anything too fancy.
