I'm planning to upgrade my setup from an AM4/5800X3D, mostly for CPU-heavy games like Path of Exile while playing at 2K 165Hz with a 9070XT. Recently, the price gap between the 7800X3D and 9800X3D has widened from $70 to around $170. This is making me question whether the 9800X3D is worth the extra cost if I deal with annoying FPS lows in my games. Should I stick with the 7800X3D, or is the extra cash for the 9800X3D justified?

When I upgraded to the 7800X3D, I found it was a killer combo with my 9070XT. I noticed a significant boost without breaking the bank. Honestly, for the price difference, it's not worth the leap to the 9800X3D.
If the difference is $170, the 7800X3D is the better choice. You’ll still get awesome performance with a 9070XT combo. From my experience, it performs great even at 4K in many titles. Just don’t fall for the price hike – you’re not losing out on much.
Totally agree with that!
For a $170 saving, I'd definitely go for the 7800X3D. It's just not worth it for the extra cost in your scenario! At 2K resolution, the CPU performance difference between the two will be around 10% in CPU-heavy games, which isn't massive at all.
Why not consider the 9700X instead? I’ve got the 9070XT, and it runs smoothly for most games.
I think you’re looking at it wrong. If you analyze the upgrades from 5800X3D to the newer models, the $170 for the jump to 9800X3D really doesn’t offer enough return on investment. Instead, focus on solid components like 32GB RAM and a good SSD; that might give you a better boost overall.
I appreciate your input, thanks!
