Should I move from a Ryzen 7 3700X to AM5 for my RTX 5070 Ti?

I upgraded my system in December 2025 from a Ryzen 7 3700X, GTX 1660 Super, and 16GB of RAM to an RTX 5070 Ti, a 1TB SSD, and additional memory. The 3700X still feels perfectly fine for development, multitasking, and general use, but at 1440p ultrawide gaming I can often see the 5070 Ti being heavily held back by the CPU.

A Ryzen 7 5800X3D is too expensive where I live, costing around $395, while a Ryzen 5 9600X costs about $315 before adding a suitable motherboard. Would it make more sense to move to AM5 with a 9600X or 9700X, or should I keep the 3700X and wait for a future platform such as AM6? I could also sell my unused DDR5 memory if I stay on AM4.

One other question: if I move to AM5, would running temporarily with a single 16GB DDR5 stick be acceptable, or should I buy a dual-channel kit immediately?

The biggest issue is that 16GB in a single stick is not ideal for a 5070 Ti. A dual-channel kit should improve minimum FPS and overall responsiveness. If you stay with AM4, the 5800X3D plus 2x16GB or 2x8GB DDR4 would be the strongest gaming upgrade, but it only makes sense if its local price is reasonable.

If the prices are close, I’d lean toward the 9600X and AM5 rather than paying more for a 5800X3D. You’ll get a newer platform with a future upgrade path, and you can add a matching memory module later. Single-channel RAM will reduce performance, but it won’t make the system unusable in the short term.

Double-check the memory type before buying anything: a Ryzen 7 3700X and its AM4 motherboards use DDR4, not DDR5. If the 16GB stick is DDR5, it cannot be installed in your current system and would only be useful after moving to AM5. Also, don’t wait specifically for AM6—there’s no reliable timeline, and you could be leaving performance on the table for years.
