Should I Stay as an IT Admin or Transition to a Junior Sys Admin Role?

I'm aiming for a Sys Admin position in my career. I'm curious if Junior Sys Admin roles generally offer a higher salary compared to IT Admin positions, but I'm finding it hard to get salary info since many job postings don't list it. Should I continue as an IT Admin until I have enough experience for a full Sys Admin role, or is it worth it to move into a Junior Sys Admin position now? I believe I have adequate experience for a Junior role, but I'm wondering if it would come with a salary increase.

I made the switch from IT Admin to Junior Sys Admin and found that companies can vary widely in what they expect. Some designations are essentially fluff. I suggest looking at job descriptions closely—it's often about the responsibilities that come with the title rather than the title itself.

Totally agree! Sometimes it’s just about getting your foot in the door. If the responsibilities align with what you want to do in the long run, that could be the way to go.

Honestly, titles can mean different things at different companies. Many folks with the 'Sys Admin' title might not even have the depth of skills you'd expect. Focus more on the responsibilities you'd have rather than just the title. If you feel you're already doing junior-level Sys Admin tasks as an IT Admin, moving to that role could be beneficial for your growth and might come with a salary bump.

Exactly! It's all about what you actually do day to day more than the title. If you feel you're ready, go for that Junior role!

Don't let titles hold you back! I was in a similar spot and jumped into a Junior Sys Admin role. Sure, there might be challenges, but you might find that you're already doing Sys Admin tasks as an IT Admin anyway. Plus, it could definitely be a step up in pay if you showcase your skills well.

Right? Growing into a Sys Admin role often depends on proving your skills. If you've got the confidence, go for it!
