Hey everyone! Hope you're all doing well. I graduated with a BSc in Computer Science about a year ago and have been working as a Frontend Developer at a small local company. It's been a decent experience, and I've learned a lot because I work closely with my only coworker, who handles backend development. The downside is that my workload greatly depends on his progress, which has been minimal during the summer. While I can focus on my personal projects, I'm worried that I'm stagnating in my professional development. I feel I need more mentorship and exposure to other developers for growth. Also, my boss is about to have a baby, which means I might be stagnant for even longer. Should I start looking for a bigger company where I can learn more, or should I stick it out here? Any advice would be super helpful! Thanks!

It sounds like you're in a tough spot, but you've already identified a potential opportunity! Since you have the chance to work closely with your boss, maybe you could propose to help with the backend tasks whenever he’s unavailable. It could be a good way to dip your toes into that area and keep your skills sharp while waiting for your next move!
Honestly, I'd recommend starting to look for other opportunities. Your position seems heavily reliant on your boss, and without a team environment, you're missing out on learning from others and getting that essential mentorship. At this early stage in your career, it's crucial to gain exposure to different problem-solving approaches and collaborative practices.
That really hit home for me! It’s reassuring to hear others feel the same way. Thanks for the insight!
Definitely start honing your skills and search for opportunities at larger companies. It's okay to explore your options, especially since you're not getting much growth right now.
Exactly! This is your moment to explore and see what fits best for you!
I’d say definitely keep your options open. If you feel you're not learning anything new, it's definitely a red flag. Find a company that emphasizes team collaboration and mentorship. You want to avoid stagnation, especially now while you're still early in your career!
Thanks! I really needed to hear that. Looking for a team-oriented atmosphere sounds like the right plan.
From personal experience, if you’re starting to feel stagnant, it’s usually a sign to move. You want to be somewhere that offers continuous learning and growth opportunities. Don't hesitate to find a team where you can thrive!
Absolutely! I thought the same while reading. It could really benefit you in the long run.
