I'm currently utilizing Azure's built-in backup solution for my VMs and SQL databases, relying on Locally Redundant Storage (LRS). Additionally, we're using Azure Site Recovery (ASR) to replicate our data to another region and our Azure Vaults are set to be immutable. I'm exploring the option of using a third-party backup solution like Rubrik. While I find Rubrik's features appealing, I wonder if it offers significant advantages over Azure's native solution, aside from simply moving our backups to their environment. Given that Rubrik is more expensive, I'm concerned about potential higher egress costs from Microsoft. Are there any tangible benefits to consider when comparing Rubrik to Azure's current backups?

Have you looked into Commvault? It's another alternative that offers robust features for backups.
If you mean Azure Site Recovery (ASR), I've found Azure backup vaults generally effective, though they can sometimes be inconsistent. It sounds like you have a solid strategy in place for your critical VMs!
Although I haven't used Rubrik myself, it's important to consider why you'd want to transition from Azure's backup system. Ask yourself if you're encountering any major issues with it or if there's something specific Rubrik offers that you truly need. If Azure is functioning properly for you, it might not be worth the switch. Plus, keep in mind the costs involved in migrating.
That's a good point. Azure's backup has been working fine for us. I'm just running through scenarios where our tenant might be compromised, and what safeguards are in place to prevent data deletion. Do you know how that works with LTR compliance for SQL? I'm curious about what limits there are around data safety.
From my experience, unless there's a need for specific functionalities that Azure's backup and ASR aren't providing, you might not gain much by switching to a third-party solution. If you're already using Azure, it could be better to stick with it unless there's a pressing reason to switch, like wanting a unified platform for on-prem and cloud solutions or if you're using the third-party tool for other services.
I appreciate your insight! We're using Veeam for on-prem backups, but as we shift more workloads to Azure, our dependence on it will decrease. I just wonder if there's any real gain in benefits, particularly in terms of security.

Yes, that's correct! We use ASR for our important VMs between regions.
