I've recently started building a new gaming rig for myself as a New Year treat. Currently, I'm using an Intel i9-10850k but I'm experiencing quite a bit of CPU bottleneck at 1440p gaming. I just bought a 9800x3d but I'm having second thoughts—should I keep it or return it? I've also got a 64GB DDR5 RAM kit at 6000MHz and an RTX 5080 on the way. Should I have waited for a price drop on the 9800 or perhaps held out for the upcoming Zen 6?

Honestly, I wouldn't wait for Zen 6. Sure, the rumored 2nm process sounds cool, but the gains in CPU performance have been minimal lately. The 7800x3d is a solid choice for years to come. If you’ve got that RTX 5080, I'd say go for the 9800x3d but maybe think about waiting for the 9850x3d instead—could be worth it!
I hear you! It’s crazy how much PC gaming has ballooned in cost. I remember when I built my first rig with birthday money! If you're apprehensive, maybe check for a price drop on the 9800x3d during your return window. But either way, it sounds like you’re set for some serious performance!
If you’re considering the CPU landscape, you might want to hold off a bit for the 9850x3d which is launching soon. For me, though, I’d rather invest in a nice 4k OLED monitor than keep swapping CPUs!
You've already got one of the best gaming CPUs available, so I'd recommend sticking with the 9800x3d. Zen 6 is likely still a ways out, and you can keep building your system and enjoy it now. Plus, with those RAM prices, you could make a pretty penny selling some of that 64GB later!
Honestly, gaming isn’t really my thing, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I prefer chess and online poker. But if you're excited about your build, go for what makes you happy!
