I recently bought a Samsung SSD from Amazon to back up my phone photos and videos. However, I'm worried about the possibility of someone tampering with it before it got to me, potentially installing malware that could put my device at risk. The box seemed a bit dusty when I opened it, making me think it might have been used before. How likely is it that my drive could be compromised, and is there any way to check for issues before I use it?

If the SSD looks dusty and doesn’t match the description, definitely return it. If it's refurbished, they should disclose that. Also, you can safely wipe the drive by booting from a Linux USB like Ubuntu, which allows you to format it and check it for issues. Just a heads-up: SSDs aren't the best for long-term storage, so make sure to power it on periodically to prevent data loss over time. I'm big on multiple backups myself! Check this link for more details on SSD longevity.
I’m not the OP, but I found your advice intriguing! Does "cell rot" actually damage the drive over time, or just the data? Really helpful info by the way!
If you think it looks like it’s been opened or used, I’d say definitely return it. When buying electronics on Amazon, I often go straight to the manufacturer’s store to feel more secure. Better safe than sorry!
Thanks for the tip! I’m actually going on vacation soon and wish I had more time, but I think I'd feel safer just picking one up in a local store if possible.
But how can we be sure that the Samsung store on Amazon doesn’t mix their inventory with previously opened items?
Honestly, I think you're overthinking it a bit. It’s similar to worrying about buying a new bike and thinking it might be rigged to harm you. Just give it a good look-over. If you're not tech-savvy, maybe ask someone who is to help you format it safely before you use it.
Thanks for sharing that PDF! I’m still learning about tech stuff, but it’s eye-opening. I always thought my hard drives would last as long as I didn’t drop them or spill anything on them!
