Hey folks! I'm currently using an i5 12400f for my civil engineering tasks, focusing on software like Revit and AutoCAD. I'm considering an upgrade to the i5 14600k and I'm curious about whether the performance improvements justify the cost. Specifically, will I notice a significant boost in everyday tasks on Windows and while working on complex projects?

The performance boost you get from upgrading to the 14600k might not be hugely noticeable for typical tasks in Windows or office work. That said, if you're running complex drawings in AutoCAD or doing anything 3D-related, you could see some nice benefits. Just keep in mind you'll need to update your motherboard's BIOS for compatibility, and if you're using the stock cooler with your 12400f, you'll definitely want a beefier cooler for the 14600k.

Totally agree! The 14600k is a solid choice. If you can snag one second-hand, it’s one of the best deals on the market. Just be cautious about CPU degradation which affected some chips in the generation; however, it mainly hit the higher wattage ones and not the 100-150 watt range like the one you're eyeing. Overall, it balances performance and budget well, plus it’ll give you better single-threaded performance that can help in your daily tasks and larger projects.

Yeah, the 14600K can definitely run smoother with the right setup. I’m actually in the process of updating my BIOS to the latest version too for better support.

If your motherboard has good VRMs and with the recent price drops, switching isn't a bad idea at all! Just make sure to check which motherboard model you have to ensure compatibility.
