I'm deciding whether to keep upgrading my current AM4 gaming and editing PC or build a new AM5 system. My current hardware is an ASUS ROG Strix X370-F motherboard, Ryzen 7 3700X, RTX 3060 Ti, and 32GB of DDR4 running at 3133MHz with XMP. I was considering replacing the motherboard with a B550-F so I could continue using AM4 and gain PCIe 4.0 support. However, I found some newer B850 boards for roughly the same price, which made me consider moving to AM5 instead.
A possible new build would use a B850 or X870 motherboard, a Ryzen 5 9600X, 32GB or more of DDR5, and my existing RTX 3060 Ti until I can upgrade to a faster graphics card. I mainly play modern games such as ARC Raiders, Star Citizen, Cyberpunk 2077, VR titles, and Microsoft Flight Simulator. I also do photo and video editing. I currently play at 1080p but would like to move to 1440p or 4K if the hardware allows it.
Would it make more sense to upgrade the graphics card and CPU while staying on AM4, or is AM5 worth the cost now? I'm also wondering whether PCIe 5.0 and newer platforms are important enough to justify waiting or rebuilding around them.

I’d only move to AM5 now if you specifically want the newer platform, need additional CPU performance for editing, or are comfortable paying for several parts at once. Otherwise, keep the X370 board if its BIOS supports a suitable Ryzen 5000 processor, upgrade the GPU first, and replace the whole platform later when you need a larger performance jump. Waiting for a future generation can also make sense if your current system is still meeting your needs.
AM5 is the better choice if you are building a completely new system and want a longer upgrade path, but it is not automatically the best upgrade for your current PC. You would need a new motherboard, CPU, and DDR5 memory, while the RTX 3060 Ti would remain the same. Unless you also plan to replace the GPU soon, the extra platform cost may not improve gaming performance much right now. AM4 can still be stretched for several more years with a faster Ryzen 7 chip and a future GPU upgrade.
The practical gaming difference between PCIe 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 is usually very small, especially with a graphics card like the 3060 Ti. PCIe 5.0 is not a compelling reason by itself to replace the motherboard. Keeping your current board and putting the budget toward a stronger GPU would likely produce a more noticeable improvement. You can then upgrade the CPU later if you start seeing CPU limits in simulation games or high-refresh-rate gaming.
If you want the best value, staying on AM4 is still reasonable. A Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a major upgrade over the 3700X and can handle a much faster graphics card without creating a serious bottleneck. Your current motherboard may support it with a BIOS update, so you might not even need to buy a B550 board. That money would probably be better spent on a GPU, especially since the RTX 3060 Ti is more likely to limit performance at higher resolutions than your CPU.
That makes sense. I was mostly concerned about whether newer platform features would become important soon, but it sounds like the graphics card should come first. I’ll also look into whether my existing board supports the 5800X3D.

The PCIe comparison helps a lot. I had assumed PCIe 5.0 would make a much larger difference, so I’m less interested in changing platforms just for that feature.
