Should I upgrade my existing AM4 system or move to AM5?

My current PC is an AM4 system with a Ryzen 5 3600, a GTX 1660 Super, 16GB of DDR4, and an MSI B450M Plus motherboard. It has started to feel outdated, especially because I also use it to virtualize several machines and 16GB of memory is becoming limiting. Gaming at 1080p and 60Hz is also getting harder with newer titles.

I would prefer to upgrade rather than keep making compromises, but the cost of a new AM5 motherboard, DDR5 memory, and processor is difficult to justify. Staying on AM4 would let me upgrade the CPU to an X3D model, add more memory, and buy a better GPU without replacing the entire platform.

Does it make more sense to extend the life of this AM4 system, or should I accept the higher upfront cost and move to AM5 now? I'm concerned that sticking with AM4 only delays the inevitable and could mean spending more on upgrades over the next few years.

A practical rule is: if you already have AM4, improve that system; if you were building from scratch, AM5 would make more sense. AM4 systems can still be useful for years, and there is no guarantee that waiting will make DDR5 or future platforms dramatically cheaper. Buy based on the performance problem you have now rather than trying to predict component prices several years ahead.

If you do decide to replace the platform, look for a reasonably priced AM5 bundle rather than buying every part separately. Otherwise, keeping the current board and putting the savings toward RAM and a GPU is likely the less expensive route.

The main problem should determine the upgrade path. If virtualization is important, prioritize more memory first—16GB is pretty restrictive for running several virtual machines. Going to 32GB or 64GB may help more than immediately replacing the CPU. For gaming, you can then upgrade the GPU and see whether the Ryzen 5 3600 is still holding you back.

If your B450M Plus has adequate BIOS support and power delivery, it should be capable of handling a later-generation Ryzen 7, though you should verify the exact board revision first. An AM4 X3D chip paired with a modern GPU can still handle demanding games very well, especially at 1080p or 1440p. There is no need to abandon the platform simply because newer parts exist.

Since you already own a working AM4 motherboard and DDR4, upgrading AM4 is generally the better value. A compatible X3D processor, 32GB or 64GB of RAM, and a stronger GPU could make the system feel dramatically faster without forcing you to replace everything. Check the motherboard’s CPU support list and update the BIOS before buying a processor.

The exact X3D model depends heavily on local pricing and availability. A 5700X3D or 5800X3D is ideal if reasonably priced, but a cheaper model can still be a worthwhile upgrade rather than paying a premium for an end-of-life chip.
