Should I Upgrade My CPU and Keep My Old RAM or Go for a Prebuilt?

Hey folks! I'm currently working with an Intel i5-9600 and 32GB of DDR4-2666 RAM. My setup also includes a 3070 Founders Edition, an 850W PSU, and a decent amount of storage (1TB NVMe, 1TB SATA SSD, and 2TB HDD), paired with a couple of monitors (one 1440p and one 1080p).

I'm feeling the age of my CPU, and I had planned to upgrade it sometime next year. However, I've heard that RAM prices are expected to stay high, which is making me anxious about the timing of my upgrade.

I've been considering either upgrading to an i7-14700K for around $300 (plus a motherboard and cooling, bringing my estimated costs to about $500-$600) or going for a prebuilt system that includes an AMD 7 7800X3D with 32GB of DDR5-6000 RAM, a 5070 Ti, and 2TB NVMe storage for $1800.

While I know the performance difference between DDR4 and DDR5 isn't huge for gaming, I'm looking for some reassurance or advice on whether I should stick to upgrading my existing components or jump into a prebuilt machine. I mainly use my setup for general computing, gaming, and I might get back into streaming down the line. Thanks in advance for your input!

If you're budgeting $1800, I'd suggest considering the prebuilt option instead of sticking with that old DDR4 RAM. Upgrading just around the RAM could leave you wanting more sooner than later. The RTX 5070Ti in the prebuilt will also give you better performance overall, especially if you eventually want to game in 4K. It's a solid option!

That's a good point! Sometimes it's better to invest in modern hardware rather than just prolonging the life of older components.

You might want to look for a second-hand motherboard, CPU, and RAM combo instead. Depending on your local market, you could find some great deals that save you money. I got a Ryzen 5800X setup for $400 recently! If you're willing to sell your old rig, the prebuilt could be worth it too since you can recoup some costs that way.

Good catch! The second-hand route can really save you a lot if you're willing to put in some effort to find the right deals.

While upgrading just the CPU might seem appealing, if you can find an affordable newer CPU that works with your existing DDR4 setup, like the i9-9900K, it might hold you over for now until prices normalize. However, newer tech will provide better future-proofing, so keep that in mind if you plan to game seriously.

I feel you—it's a tough choice! But I'd lean towards getting something modern. That prebuilt could save you from tech frustration down the road.
