Should I Upgrade My CPU Now or Wait for the Next Generation?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 3600X with an RTX 4070 Super and 32GB of DDR4 RAM. I have a 32:9 1440p monitor, but I usually play most of my games at 16:9 1440p since I also stream and record my sessions. I haven't given the ultra-wide setting a try yet, but I got it mainly for multitasking and basic editing. I'm considering upgrading to a 5900XT and wondering if it's worth it. Do you think it'll last me more than five years? Eventually, I want to upgrade my GPU to a top-end model for 4K gaming, but I'm curious about how much my CPU might bottleneck that performance.

If you're content with your current performance, there's really no rush to upgrade until you feel a drop in quality. Going from a 5600 to a 5900X does give a solid performance boost, but don’t expect miracles, especially with RAM prices being high right now.

Just a heads up, AM6 is rumored to be several years away. If you're aiming for a high-end GPU, it might make sense to get one of the AM5 X3Ds instead. You’ll want to avoid spending a lot on a 5900XT since CPUs like the 5600X or 5800XT already provide excellent performance for gaming.

I don't think Zen 7 will be on AM5, honestly. AMD will likely push for new chipsets, so it might be better to save up for something solid instead of relying on the old tech.

Upgrading to even a simple 5600X would give you noticeable gains, and they’re pretty cheap these days. You might find them used for around $50 to $80!

Definitely look for a 5700X too since it’s only a bit more in price. Just remember to update your BIOS before installing a newer CPU to ensure compatibility!

Honestly, unless you need the extra cores for heavy multitasking, the 5800X3D is better suited for gaming than the 5900XT. Financially, it’s a smaller investment than a full platform change. Just remember, your setup right now is pretty solid for what you're using it for, so it might be worth waiting if RAM prices continue to rise.

Totally agree, I think I’ll just wait a bit longer and see if I can grab a 5800X3D when the prices normalize.

If you’re considering a 5900XT, it will be better than your current setup, no doubt, but keep in mind the CPU's importance wanes at higher resolutions. If you want 4K in the future, you'd have to focus on getting a good CPU to avoid bottlenecks. But currently, the 32GB kit of DDR5 RAM is quite expensive; it’s worth checking your budget before making a big investment. Do you really need a top-end GPU right now or can you wait a bit longer?

I can see wanting a high-class GPU to last through a couple CPU cycles, but RAM is always going to be tied to whatever CPU I choose. It’s tricky. I might hold off on the RAM upgrade for now.

If you're looking to hold out until AM6, then try to find a 5800X3D. It's a bit pricier since it's not being produced anymore, but the investment could pay off in 3-4 years compared to the 5900XT.
