Should I Upgrade My CPU to Improve Performance with RTX 5070 Ti?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to an RTX 5070 Ti and have noticed that some games, like Oblivion Remastered and Monster Hunter: Wilds, aren't performing as well as I'd hoped. I realize these games can be demanding because of engine issues, but I'm curious if upgrading my CPU might help. Currently, I have an i7-12700K running at 3.6GHz with 12 cores. I was considering swapping it for an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D since I've heard it pairs well with the 5070 Ti. Here are my other specs:
- Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix Z690-A
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB (2 sticks)
- Power Supply: 1200W Be Quiet Platinum
Let me know what I might upgrade to smooth out my gaming experience!

Consider a 7800X3D too; it might give you similar boosts. Just weigh the performance against the cost.

Are you gaming at 4K resolution? If it's lower like 1080p or 1440p, your setup should be more than capable of handling it at high settings without severe performance drops.

Definitely consider the Ryzen 9800X3D if you're looking to maximize gaming performance. It's currently one of the best CPUs for gaming, even more so than the 9950X3D. If you want a good price-to-performance ratio for your 5070 Ti, it’s a solid choice.

From experience, even with a 9800X3D and 5070 Ti, it feels like the CPU is a bit of an overkill for most games, unless you’re playing high-demand titles like Tarkov or Battlefield 6.

If you're set on upgrading, the 9800X3D will help, but make sure you do a clean reinstall of Windows afterward. Also, ensure your BIOS settings are optimal before making any hardware changes. The i7-12700K really shouldn’t be causing any bottlenecks.

Your i7-12700K is actually a solid CPU. Upgrading to the 9800X3D could give you some performance gains, but don't expect miracles. Have you checked how much your CPU and GPU are being utilized while playing? That info can help figure out if there's a bottleneck.

Actually, my usage is around 60-70% on both CPU and GPU during Oblivion. The frame rate is stuck at around 25 FPS on ultra settings, even though frame generation is turned on, but it feels kind of laggy.

You might want to tweak some settings further or try DLSS! That could help improve performance without needing a full upgrade.

You’re fine with your current setup. Yes, a Ryzen 9 might give a slight edge, but considering the cost of upgrading everything—motherboard, CPU, RAM—it’s not worth it right now. Just give it some time and maybe consider a GPU upgrade down the line.

I totally feel that! It’s frustrating to finally have a decent setup and still run into performance issues with games. Especially with Monster Hunter, it’s either looks good with terrible performance or looks bad with slightly better performance.

What resolution are you playing at? If it’s high, have you tried lowering some graphics settings? Sometimes small tweaks can make a noticeable difference without shelling out for new hardware.

I’ve tried adjusting settings, but I’ve hit a wall where it looks decent without looking terrible. I did install performance patches for Oblivion too.
