Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum and really appreciate any advice you can share. I'm reaching out because I'm weighing the pros and cons of upgrading my setup. Here's what I currently have:
- **Motherboard:** Gigabyte Z970 Gaming X Rev 1.0
- **CPU:** Intel i7 12700K (stock)
- **GPU:** PowerColor Radeon RX 7700 XT 12GB
- **RAM:** XPG Lancer 32GB DDR5 5200MHz
- **PSU:** Cooler Master MWE Bronze V2 750W
- **SSD:** Samsung 970 EVO Plus + Kingston SNV2S
I built this setup in early 2024 and I'm mainly a gamer using it at **1440p 120Hz**. I play a variety of titles, particularly CPU-heavy and GPU-intensive games like **Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate 3, Clair Obscur Expedition 33, and other Paradox strategy games.**
I might get the chance to buy some new hardware in the US next year, so I'm curious: Should I upgrade my CPU, GPU, or both? Are AMD's CPUs really that much better for gaming compared to what I have? Is my system still good for my needs? Thanks for your help!

If I were you, I would focus on upgrading the GPU. Your CPU is still pretty capable, and unless you’re looking for a massive bump in performance, it might not be worth the cost to upgrade both.
Your rig is still pretty solid! Unless you're unhappy with performance, I'd say think about the upgrade more as a want rather than a need. Just moving up a tier with the GPU could be enough to keep you happy without breaking the bank.
Honestly, I wouldn't bother upgrading the CPU. My i9 11900K with a 4080 Super runs demanding games at 1440P without any issues. If you're thinking about an upgrade, I'd recommend looking into something like a 5070 Ti or 5080 for noticeable performance boosts instead.
Thanks for that insight! It's definitely making me lean towards a GPU upgrade.
If you're looking to upgrade, consider some AMD options like the MI50 or MI60 GPUs. Just make sure they fit into your budget—US prices can be a great chance to snag a deal!
Ultimately, the decision is yours. Your current setup is solid for 1440p; if you’re happy with performance, there's no rush to upgrade. DLSS is great, but it won't make your current rig obsolete. Focus on what meets your needs the best.
I think I sometimes get caught up in wanting the latest tech! But you’re right; I’m pretty satisfied with my performance right now.
There's some great info out there on Stellaris benchmarks if you're really curious. But honestly, upgrading your GPU seems like the most straightforward choice. Your current games should run fine without spending heavily on new CPUs right now.
I appreciate that! I'm mainly interested in getting good performance in games like Stellaris, but I don’t want to upgrade just for one game if it’s not necessary.

Totally agree! The difference between top CPUs usually isn't noticeable unless you're really picky. A new GPU would be a much better investment for a solid performance boost.
