Should I Upgrade My Motherboard or Look for Other Solutions for My Ryzen 9 5900X?

I originally built my PC with a Ryzen 7 1700x on an X370 motherboard. Recently, I was gifted a Ryzen 9 5900X, which has been working fine, even on the older X370 board. However, since the release of Battlefield 6, I've noticed a CPU bottleneck during the game's most intensive moments. Surprisingly, my CPU usage only peaks around 60%, and my GPU (RTX 3090) doesn't seem to be the issue. I'm trying to figure out a few things:

1. Is my X370 motherboard causing this performance bottleneck? Should I consider upgrading to a B550 or X570?

2. Could the 5900X itself be lacking for gaming, even though it doesn't hit 100% utilization?

3. Or is there another underlying issue I haven't considered? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

I’d recommend checking out a video that compares performance on X370 vs X570 at this timestamp: [https://youtu.be/kh3AV6FY0DM?t=405](https://youtu.be/kh3AV6FY0DM?t=405).
Based on my experience with the 5900X and RTX 3080, I haven't faced any significant performance drops in Battlefield. Issues you’re experiencing might be due to something else, not just the motherboard. For instance, run DDU to uninstall your Nvidia drivers completely and then do a fresh install.

1. Nah, the X370 board isn’t likely your bottleneck.
2. The 5900X has a unique design with two 6-core chiplets, which can lead to latency issues when data has to be transferred between them. This setup can give the impression of underutilization at the CPU level, but the active cores are often maxed out trying to keep up.
3. If you're playing a CPU-heavy game, the 5900X might just be struggling a bit under pressure. You’d probably need to look at moving to an AM5 setup if you want a significant upgrade.

I run a 5700X with an RTX 4070, and Battlefield performs great for me. It’s most likely an issue with your motherboard's PCIe Gen 3 lanes affecting your GPU, which could cause low utilization across the board.

You can’t expect the game to fully utilize all 12 cores of the 5900X. At 60% usage, you might still be bottlenecked because what matters is how well the GPU is being utilized too. If you’re averaging around 115 FPS, that’s likely the limit of your CPU. If you’re targeting higher FPS, consider a 12700K or 5800X3D for better performance.
