Hey everyone! I'm planning to upgrade my PC in the next couple of months and need some advice. Here's what I've got right now:
- Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM
- Intel i7 9700k CPU
- MSI RTX 3060 Ti Gaming X Trio
- Asus Prime B365M-A motherboard
I also have an old 750W PSU that's about 10 years old, so I'll probably upgrade that too. My motherboard only supports PCIe 3.0, which I think is bottlenecking my GPU. I really don't want to replace my GPU because it's still performing well; I'm mostly looking to eliminate any performance bottlenecks.
I've seen recommendations for the 9800X3D and 9850X3D CPUs, which fit my budget. Do these processors still perform well? Is there a significant difference between them? Should I consider waiting for the AM6 platform?
Also, since my current motherboard limits my RAM speed to 2666MHz, I'm thinking of upgrading to a faster model with a newer chipset. What speed should I aim for? Last time I checked, DDR4 was still recommended over DDR5; has that changed? Thanks for the help!

So here's the deal: the 9800X3D and 9850X3D are essentially the same chip with the 9850 having slightly higher clock speeds. It's not really worth it to pay extra for that. As for waiting for AM6, nobody really knows when it’s dropping, and it could take a while. If your PC isn't feeling too slow for your needs, you could wait a bit to see if prices stabilize. But if you're itching for better performance, the 9000 series is a solid upgrade right now!
6000MT CL30 is often recommended because it provides a good balance of speed and latency for performance. If you're looking for cost-effective RAM, just ensure it fits within your budget and has decent compatibility with your new setup. Cheaper options can sometimes lead to bottlenecks, so just be aware!
Just to clarify, AM6 refers to the upcoming motherboard socket, while Zen 6 refers to the CPU lineup that uses the AM5. If you go with AM6, you'll definitely need a new motherboard and likely new RAM too. Zen 6 will work with AM5 boards and requires DDR5 RAM. What are you thinking? You mentioned your current setup is an LGA1151, meaning you'll need to upgrade regardless for better performance.
If you go with the 9800 or 9850X3D, you should be pretty satisfied with performance for a long time. However, it might be wise to wait for prices on memory and storage to go down. If you're not on a tight budget though, a complete upgrade could be worth considering.
