Hey everyone! I built my first PC around 6 or 7 years ago for engineering tasks like CAD and CFD, but I also used it for some gaming. Here are my current specs: I've got a Ryzen 5 3400G CPU, 16GB of 3000MHz Viper RAM, an ROG STRIX B450-F motherboard, and an ROG Strix RX580 8GB GPU, all powered by a CM MasterWatt Lite 500W PSU. It was a solid build back in the day, but I've noticed my CPU really starting to lag lately, especially since the end of May. The GPU still handles CAD and simulations reasonably well, but it does struggle at times. I'm considering upgrading my CPU, adding another 16GB of RAM, and possibly getting a new PSU. I want to keep the motherboard if possible and save some cash. I'd love to hear your thoughts and advice!

If you're just going for a CPU upgrade, remember you'll need to update the BIOS, and your only option would be Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. Also, make sure to get RAM that matches the speed of your current setup, or you can just go for new 3600MHz RAM since it's more efficient than 3000MHz. Definitely consider a new PSU, especially if you're getting a new GPU soon.
I'd suggest a couple of options. First, consider adding a dedicated Nvidia GPU for better hardware-accelerated rendering, as Nvidia's CUDA cores are great for tasks like yours. If you're only planning to upgrade the CPU, aim for one of the non-integrated Ryzen 5000 series CPUs—they do perform better without integrated graphics. Just be aware that if you choose one of these CPUs, you'll need to have a GPU installed to boot your system. In summary, I’d recommend a GPU upgrade first, followed by a CPU and RAM upgrade.
What’s your budget looking like? Got around £400? That could be a tight squeeze for parts these days, but it’s worth planning around that.
