Should I upgrade my PC or just get a PS5?

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I recently purchased The Last of Us Part 1 for PC, and it turned out to be quite a struggle to run. My current setup includes a Ryzen 5 5600X, B550 motherboard, GTX 1660 SUPER, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD, all on a 144 Hz, 1440p monitor. I've enjoyed playing other games like Elden Ring and RE4 Remake without issues, but this specific game has been disappointing. I only played for under two hours, so I could return it if needed.

I've been considering whether to upgrade my PC or to buy a PS5 when they become available in 2025. I'm a big fan of From Software games and have never played Bloodborne or Demon's Souls; I tried emulating Bloodborne, but it was very buggy. With PlayStation Plus, I could access a bunch of other games like Death Stranding and God of War. Plus, a built-in Blu-ray player would be a nice addition.

My PC has served me well, especially for schoolwork and emulation, but it's starting to struggle with newer and more demanding games, and I've heard GTA 6 will be exclusive for a year. I'm also unsure if it's silly to own a third console. I'm not very tech-savvy, and my sibling built the PC for me, so I'm looking for some advice. Thanks!

I’d suggest just upgrading your GPU. That alone should let you run most games smoothly. Something like an RTX 4070 or an RX 7700 XT would be great options. Trust me, the performance bump will be worth it!

Absolutely! If you can, consider bumping your RAM to 32 GB. I did that with my setup, and it really helped, even though 16 GB is still decent.

Definitely upgrade that GPU! I have a similar setup, and a GPU upgrade made a huge difference for me. You’ll probably end up enjoying it more than switching to a PS5.

How much of a difference are you seeing in games after upgrading?

If you look at cost, for around $500, you could get a new GPU that outperforms a PS5 by a good margin. Why not stick with your PC and get the most out of it?

Yeah, I get where you're coming from. I used to upgrade constantly until I got a PS5. It's been nice playing without the stress of constantly upgrading for new launches. But if upgrading makes sense for you, that's a solid route!

Doesn't that make you worry about missing out on exclusive titles?

I think you're on the right track. A good mid-range GPU like an RX 6800 can deliver PS5-level performance and give you more flexibility without the console limitations.
