I'm planning a major upgrade and am deciding between staying on AM4 or moving to AM5. My current system has a Ryzen 5 3600, GTX 1660 Super, 16GB of DDR4, a B450 Tomahawk Max, and a 650W power supply. It has served me well, but I'd like significantly better CPU and GPU performance and want to move to 32GB of memory.
My AM4 idea is a Ryzen 7 5800X for $220, an RTX 5060 Ti 8GB for $500, and 32GB of DDR4 for $260, while keeping my current motherboard and power supply. The estimated total is $980.
My AM5 idea is a Ryzen 5 9600X for $180, the same RTX 5060 Ti 8GB for $500, 32GB of DDR5 for $420, and an Asus TUF B850-PLUS WIFI motherboard for $200. That build would cost about $1,300.
Would either build be a good use of my $1,500 budget? Should I choose a different CPU or GPU, reuse my existing memory, move to AM5 for better upgrade potential, or wait before upgrading?

For gaming, I’d lean toward staying on AM4 and putting the savings into the graphics card. A stronger GPU, such as an RTX 5070-class card if you can find one near your budget, would usually provide a larger performance improvement than spending heavily on the AM5 platform while keeping the same 8GB card. A 16GB Radeon option is also worth checking.
I wouldn’t rush to upgrade every component at once. First decide what resolution and games you play, then prioritize the GPU. At 1080p, the 5060 Ti may be adequate, but for higher settings or newer games, 8GB of VRAM is restrictive. If you go AM5, make sure the total platform cost doesn’t force you into an underpowered graphics card.
AM5 makes more sense if you value future upgrades and expect to keep the motherboard for several years. The 9600X should be more efficient and gives you a newer platform, but the expensive DDR5 and motherboard leave less money for the GPU. With your current budget, the AM4 build may deliver better performance today, while AM5 is the better long-term foundation.
Since you already own an AM4 motherboard, the value route is to update its BIOS and install a stronger AM4 processor. Depending on availability, a Ryzen 5500X3D, 5700X3D, or 5800X3D-style chip would be a better gaming upgrade than a regular 5800X. You may also be able to keep your existing DDR4 and simply add another matching 2x8GB kit, assuming your current memory is compatible.
The biggest issue is the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB at $500. That’s a lot to pay for a card with only 8GB of VRAM. I’d look for a 16GB Radeon 9060 XT instead, or consider a used RTX 4070 Super if you specifically want Nvidia features. A card with at least 12GB of VRAM would make more sense for a $500 graphics budget.
Agreed. The 5060 Ti can be a decent card, but spending that much on the 8GB version limits its useful lifespan. Put the same money toward more VRAM if possible.

Make sure the BIOS is updated while the Ryzen 5 3600 is still installed. Also verify that the new memory kit matches the existing kit closely enough to run reliably.
