Should I Upgrade to 4 RAM Sticks or Stick with 2?

I'm currently using a G.Skill DDR4 Ripjaws-V 2x16GB 3200 setup, but I'm considering adding two more sticks to future-proof my gaming rig. With DDR5 prices skyrocketing, I'm sticking with my AM4 platform for now. My concern is whether it's safe to upgrade to 4x16GB without facing issues. Some folks say filling all 4 RAM slots isn't ideal, but if I get the same model, will the performance be fine? For context, my current specs include a Gigabyte RTX 4070, an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X (possibly upgrading to a 5700X or 5950X), and a Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE motherboard. Any advice?

If adding more RAM helps you down the line and you're set on future-proofing, go for it! I upgraded from 2 sticks to 4 recently, and I haven't faced any issues at all. It’s really about how your specific motherboard handles it. Just make sure to pick up sticks that match what you've got.

You should be okay if you buy the same RAM sticks. In most cases, using four sticks can work just fine, though occasionally it can lower the MHz due to system limitations. That said, that's pretty rare nowadays, so I wouldn’t stress too much about it. Just ensure they’re exactly the same model you already have.

Honestly, using four sticks can be hit or miss. Some users have no problems, while others can’t even stabilize their system at the same speeds they used with just two sticks. It definitely depends on your setup, but recent motherboards tend to handle them better.

While upgrading to 64GB might seem like a good long-term plan, it might not significantly boost your performance for gaming. You could get better gains by focusing your budget on CPU or GPU upgrades instead. RAM prices are high right now, so consider your priorities.
