Should I upgrade to a graphics card with 12GB VRAM for 1440p gaming?

I'm currently using a 4060 Ti with 16GB of VRAM and considering an upgrade to either an RTX 5070 or RX 9070 XT. Both are priced similarly at 32k in my country. The RTX 5070 is appealing due to its Nvidia features like Frame Generation and Path Tracing, but I'm worried about its 12GB of VRAM. I play games at 1440p on ultra settings and want to know if the 12GB VRAM will be sufficient for the next 3 to 4 years. Is the RX 9070 XT a better choice in terms of future-proofing, even with a lower emphasis on Nvidia features?

The 9070 XT is more future-proof than the 5070 and typically outperforms it by 20-30%. If you're considering both at the same price, I'd really argue for the 9070 XT, even if the Nvidia features are tempting. It’s a solid pick for maximizing your gaming experience.

Yeah, and remember, MFG is only available on Nvidia, so think about your priorities. If you're okay with fewer features for better raw performance, 9070 XT is the way to go.

I recently grabbed a 9070 XT for about $550 and it's been phenomenal at 1440p. If you're looking for longevity in your investment, you won't be disappointed with this choice.

I’m about to install mine too! Can't wait to see it in action.

Honestly, if you want to stay maxed out with ray tracing and path tracing at 1440p, the 12GB might pose problems soon. Games are pushing those limits already. I’d suggest aiming for the 9070 XT if you're worried about longevity.

I 100% agree! With the way games are evolving, it’s better to have that extra VRAM.

Exactly! 12GB is getting pushed more and more.

If you’re considering performance versus features: the 9070 XT is basically the equated performance of a 5070 Ti, so at the same cost, it's a no-brainer. If you really value Nvidia features, go for the 5070, but if raw performance matters more, 9070 XT all the way!

Right, plus you might want to save a bit longer and nab that 5070 Ti if you’re looking for the best of both worlds.

Also, keep an eye on game requirements; they could well be up against 16GB specs in a few years.

Right now, 12GB is generally okay for 1440p gaming, but there are definitely games that push past it. The RX 9070 XT has stronger rasterization performance and will likely age better than the RTX 5070. If the Nvidia features aren’t a dealbreaker for you, I’d lean toward the 9070 XT for its overall performance and future-proofing.

True, a lot of games are hitting the 12GB threshold already. It seems like the 9070 XT will have better longevity for your use case.

Exactly! Plus, with AMD's recent strides in tech, you're still getting solid performance.
