Should I upgrade to a Ryzen 9 5900X with 16GB of RAM?

I'm considering whether to buy the Ryzen 9 5900X or stick with the Ryzen 7 5700X. The 5700X is quite a bit pricier, and since I'm on a budget due to the recent increase in RAM prices, I can't upgrade my current 16GB RAM setup right now. My main concern is whether the Ryzen 9 5900X is worth it with my current RAM situation.

If you already have an AM4 setup, going for either the 5800X or 5900X might be a decent upgrade path. But if you're starting fresh, consider going Intel DDR4 for potentially better savings and future upgrade options.

I already have an AM4 build, so I guess I'm safe with those options.

Honestly, you might be better off with a Ryzen 5 5600X or 5700X instead of the 5900X. The 5900X has more cores than you can use for gaming at the moment, so it’s more about having a solid balance for gaming and some multitasking. Plus, those other options are usually cheaper.

The RAM you have is pretty important for your workload. If 16GB has been fine so far, then it should work for you. Upgrading to the 5900X might not give you much benefit for gaming or light multitasking without more RAM to back it up. If you're not facing any RAM issues now, it might not be worth it to spend more on the CPU.

That makes sense, I just want to make sure I can get the most out of my upgrades down the line.

You might not need all the cores the 5900X offers. For some gaming and casual emulation work, the 5700X or even 5800X could be more than enough. Making sure you balance your upgrades based on your needs could save you money in the long run.

The 5900X is generally not the best for just gaming. If you're mainly into that, the 5600 or 5700X should perform similarly for less cash. Think about what you’re actually using your PC for!
