Should I Upgrade to an RTX 5090 or Choose Something Else?

Hey everyone! I'm considering upgrading my GPU since my trusty 1080 Ti has served me well. Initially, I thought about going for an AMD RX 9070 XT or perhaps an RTX 5070 or 5080, as I want to enjoy ray tracing in my games. A friend suggested that I splurge on an RTX 5090, but I'm cautious about investing that much. My current specs include 32GB RAM (6200Mhz), an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU, and I'm running a triple monitor setup at 5760x1080 resolution. I'm also considering switching to 3x 1440p monitors or an ultrawide setup. I play games like Cyberpunk 2077, Satisfactory, and Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 and want to make sure I choose wisely. Will I regret getting a 5090, or is there a better option?

Unless you’ve got $2200 just lying around, I’d think twice about dropping that much on a single component. A 5070 Ti will handle most games really well, including Cyberpunk, and you’ll save a ton. Plus, you might regret tying up so much cash in one GPU.

Honestly, I'd skip the 5090. If you can find a 5070 Ti or 5080 at a decent price, go for that instead. Waiting for the new cards coming later this year might also be a smart move. The 5090 is powerful but you might not need all that firepower unless you're diving into local AI models or similar. Plus, you could get an awesome OLED monitor with the cash you save!

Thanks for the advice! That's super helpful.

True, waiting for the super tier cards may be worth it.

The 5070 Ti gives great performance for what you pay, especially for ray tracing. While the 5090 is incredible, it’s overkill for most gamers. Just keep in mind that if you're really gaming on all three monitors, that demands a lot, almost nearing 4K. Make sure your investment counts, especially with your resolution plan!

Yeah, I'm leaning towards a triple 1440p setup, so I want to make sure it runs smoothly.

If you're considering the 5090, just be ready to make the most of it—ideally at 4K. The 5090 has insane performance. But if you’re like me and want to upgrade gradually, maybe go for a 70 or 80-class card now and snag another in a few years. Probably a better strategy than relying on just one top-tier card.

That makes sense; a more gradual upgrade seems practical.
