Should I Upgrade to Ryzen 5500 or Go for 5600 with a New Motherboard?

I'm considering upgrading my processor from a Ryzen 3100 to a Ryzen 5500. My current motherboard is a B450, and I'm wondering if it's worth just replacing the CPU, or if I should also upgrade the motherboard. For context, I have a GeForce RTX 4060 as my GPU. Any advice would be appreciated!

Upgrading to the Ryzen 5500 is definitely an improvement, but have you checked how much a Ryzen 5600 costs? It's not only faster but could give you a better performance boost in the long run. If you can swing it, I'd say go for the 5600! Plus, you might only need a simple BIOS update on your motherboard for compatibility. Just keep in mind that AM4 is on its way out, so a long-term upgrade might be worth the investment.

I found the 5600 for a pretty good price near me, actually. Might make sense to just upgrade both the CPU and motherboard instead of sticking with B450.

Yeah, I'd say the Ryzen 5600 is worth considering! It's relatively affordable and delivers better performance than the 5500. Plus, with AM4 being phased out, you might get better long-term value from the 5600. As for the motherboard, sticking with your B450 is okay for now, just make sure to update the BIOS before you switch the CPUs!

The Ryzen 5500 would definitely be a solid upgrade, but if you’re aiming for better performance, the 5600 is considerably more powerful. Honestly, I wouldn’t bother with a motherboard upgrade unless you really want to take advantage of the newer features, since B450 still performs well. Just make sure to update the BIOS for the new CPU if you go that route!

Got it! I checked my motherboard, and it supports the 5500 with a BIOS update. Still debating on whether to go for the 5600 instead.
