Hey everyone! I'm planning to upgrade my aging Ryzen 5 7600 processor along with my PSU and cooler soon. I'm torn between splurging on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D for future-proofing or going for the more budget-friendly 7800X3D. Right now, I'm gaming at 1080p, but I'm hoping to jump to 1440p in the next six months. I know my current GPU, a 4060ti 8GB, isn't exactly suited for 1440p, so I also need suggestions for a PSU that'll handle a new GPU down the road. Is it even possible to overdo it on the PSU? Thanks for any help!

Both CPUs are really close performance-wise, especially if you consider 1% lows. If cash isn’t too much of an issue, grab the 9800X3D for that comfort. If you’re on a tighter budget, wait for sales, especially since the 10800X3D is coming out soon and might lower current CPU prices. Are you locked into a particular motherboard? That could change your options too!
Yeah, better deals might pop up soon!
Honestly, if you're really into gaming right now, I'd recommend the 9800X3D. It's a solid choice that won't bottleneck your gaming, especially if you plan to push into 1440p. I've got one, and it's given me so much headroom in performance, I don't worry about it holding me back at all! But if you're not in a rush, just hold off a bit and see what else comes out.
Totally agree! I went for the 9800X3D, and it was worth it. No regrets, just smooth gameplay.
Same here! I got it for future-proofing and now I don't even think about upgrading for a while.
If you're playing CPU-heavy titles like Arma or WoW, the 9800X3D is definitely a better fit. But keep in mind that if you don't need to overclock or push for max performance in competitive games, the 7600 is still great with the right GPU. And yeah, some power supplies can be overkill, but just make sure it’s a well-reviewed brand and you should be fine. Aim for future-proofing without going crazy on wattage.
I would honestly just wait until Zen 6 drops in 2026. The Ryzen 7600 is still great, and upgrading to something like the 7800X3D may not justify the cost versus performance boost. And for your PSU, plan based on what GPU you want next; like 850W for mid-range like the RX 9070 XT. Do some research on PSU ratings as you would want a reliable unit for future upgrades!
Agreed! 7600 is not bad; save your money for when Zen 6 and newer GPUs are out.
Solid advice! Prices may drop too, waiting could be smart.
I think you're overestimating the need for a CPU upgrade right now. The 7600 is still very competent! If you plan to switch to 1440p, I’d suggest you upgrade your GPU first. The 4060ti can handle 1080p well, but if you’re considering a 70 series card, that’ll give you a more noticeable improvement. As for your PSU, a solid 650W should cover you unless you're aiming for a high-end future GPU. Just focus on your GPU upgrade for now and see how the performance feels.
Yeah, I upgraded my GPU first and it made a huge difference with my current setup!
That's a good point! I’ll have to prioritize the GPU then.

I’m kinda leaning towards sales! I’d rather get a good deal.
