Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to Linux and have been enjoying using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for a little while now. My experience has been really positive, and I can't imagine going back to Windows! I'm currently running it on an ASUS fx505dt from about four or five years ago.
I wanted to ask if it's a good idea to upgrade to Ubuntu 25.04, and if I would notice a significant improvement in performance.
Also, I'm curious—when support for 25.04 ends in January 2026 and 26.04 LTS is released, is it okay to still use 25.04 for a few months without any support?

In Ubuntu, you typically have two upgrade paths: either sticking with LTS and going straight to the next LTS or taking the intermediate upgrades. I suggest you stay on 24.04 for now and then shift to 26.04 when it's out. This way, you ensure stability while learning more about Linux!
As long as you don’t need the latest features, it’s definitely worth remaining on the LTS versions. 25.04 has some neat updates like HDR support, but 24.04 will be well-supported for quite some time, which lets you take your time in upgrading confidently.
I think waiting for 26.04 might be the best move for me.
If you're unsure, why not try a live boot from a USB? That way, you can see how 25.04 feels before committing. There's even an option to upgrade your current kernel without changing your whole system. The flexibility of Linux is one of its greatest strengths!
That's a great idea! I love how many options Linux gives you to test things out.
I don’t recommend upgrading directly from 24.04 to 25.04. You'd have to jump to 24.10 first, which can be a hassle and may lead to some issues. A fresh install would be necessary, and those three months after support ends could expose you to security risks, like lack of updates. It's better to stick with 24.04 for now.
Yeah, I already looked into needing a fresh install. It seems like a bit of work, but I’ll manage.
Sticking with 24.04 LTS for now is a solid choice. You'll mainly get new packages with the upgrade to 25.04, but there won't be a huge change in how the apps function. It's generally wise to stay with the LTS versions if you don’t need any specific new features.
Thanks for the info and advice!
To add on to that, signing up for Ubuntu Pro is free for personal use! You just need to create an account, and it allows you to get longer support on your LTS versions.
Thanks for breaking that down! The upgrade process definitely looks complex.
