Should I wait for a 9800X3D replacement or go for a 7800X3D instead?

Hey everyone, I recently built a new custom PC featuring an R7-9800X3D, but I've run into quite a few issues. I started with an Asus Prime B650M motherboard, which I later swapped out for an Asus TUF B850M due to instability issues. After realizing it might not be compatible, the store informed me that my CPU might be causing the problems. Unfortunately, I've had the PC at the shop for repairs more than I've actually used it. The 9800X3D seems to be out of stock now, and they're offering me a different CPU along with a cash refund. My question is, should I wait for another 9800X3D to come in, or should I go for a 7800X3D for an extra hundred bucks since it's on sale? I also have options to consider non X3D 9000 CPUs. What do you think?

The 7800X3D is a great option and will work with any AM5 motherboard. If the shop is telling you otherwise, I’d definitely look for another place to get help. No point dealing with people who don’t know their stuff.

If they can give you a full refund, I’d say take it and find a better shop. It seems like they’re not handling the situation well. A good board should have worked fine with the 9800X3D, and it’s unlikely that the CPU itself is the main problem. If they refuse the refund, at least get your parts back and seek a second opinion from another repair shop.

Totally agree! That B650 board sounds like it’s not up to par. Even though it supposedly won't boot on their test system, I wouldn’t trust their judgment either. It sounds like they want to dump the problem onto you.

Yeah, even if the VRMs aren’t perfect, they shouldn’t damage the CPU. Just to be safe, I’d look into getting a second opinion. Better to be cautious about these things!

It sounds like that shop is a bit clueless. Either board you've mentioned should have worked fine! Spending extra money on the CPU because of their mistakes seems unfair. Definitely consider options elsewhere if you keep having issues.

The 7800X3D is still more than enough for most games these days. It sounds like a good deal to me, especially since your PC has been in repairs for so long! Might as well get something running now while you can.

Honestly, if you want your PC working sooner rather than later, going for the 7800X3D and dropping the extra $100 could be a solid choice. Just be wary of the boards; heard a lot of negative things about Asus lately. Maybe check out MSI or Gigabyte instead!

Yeah, the 9900X3D is supposed to be fantastic for gaming and processing, but if you can grab the 7800X3D at a discount, that’s not a bad choice at all!
