I recently built a PC with a 4TB 990 Pro SSD, and my friend, who helped build it, mentioned that it didn't need to be screwed in because the heatsink would keep it secure. However, I've heard mixed things about this, and now I'm wondering if I need to fix it. Would it be a hassle to take out my GPU just to screw it in? Is it really necessary?

Your friend is on the right track. As long as the SSD is securely held down by the heatsink, it's fine not to have the screw in. It’s mostly a precaution to prevent it from coming loose, but it shouldn't impact performance if everything's fitting snugly.
Yeah, I have the same setup and got away without screws too. Just make sure everything's tight!
