My husband bought a used MacBook Air from a pawn shop a couple of years ago, despite my repeated advice against it, and now we're in a bind. The pawn shop never reset it and he couldn't get the admin password; they just helped him set up a guest account. This guest account is super limited and we ended up not using it, switching to an iPad instead. Now, he's back with this MacBook Air, which has turned into a mirror image of that pawn shop computer, and he can't remember the password for any account. We need to know how to factory reset the MacBook without being able to access the admin or guest account. Any help would be appreciated!

If the MacBook is 2025, try starting it in Recovery Mode by holding down Command + R during boot-up. This might help you access the reset options directly, even without a password. Just make sure to connect it to the internet when you do—sometimes, you'll need it to reinstall macOS.
I hope that works out! Just be cautious with older devices; they can act a bit quirky.
To reset a MacBook Air, it depends on the year of the model. If it's from 2012 or newer, you can follow the steps from Apple's support page to reset it. For older models, you might need a bootable installer to reinstall the OS. Just keep in mind, the bootable installer must be made from another Mac that can run the OS you intend to install. Make sure your MacBook Air isn't too old or too new for this process.
Oh wow, I didn't realize you could just install a new OS on a laptop like that if it's locked. I thought you'd need the original owner's credentials to unlock it.
Cool, thanks for the link! But we're stuck at the screen where you have to enter a password for the user accounts. Since we don’t have the admin password from when he got it, how do we get past that?

Thanks for the tip! I’m hopeful that might just work for us since we're not too tech-savvy after using just basic stuff like iPads and phones.
