Hey everyone, I need some assistance. My hard drive has been failing, causing BSODs with memory management stop codes. CrystalDisk indicated that my D drive (the HDD) is in caution health with some pending and uncorrectable sectors. It's even making weird beeping sounds and giving me disk write errors when I try to install games on it.
I've bought a replacement SSD (Samsung 990 Pro) but realized I need a PCIe adapter to run it alongside my existing OS SSD. I thought I'd try booting up my PC without the failing HDD to see if it would be more stable, since my operating system is on the C drive, which is set as the boot drive. However, when I tried to boot, the PC wouldn't start up even after confirming the boot order. Any idea why that might be happening and how I can fix it?

It sounds like your boot partition might still be tied to the old HDD. When you install Windows, the boot partition (EFI) often ends up on whatever drive is assigned as Disk 0 at the time. If your old HDD was Disk 0 during Windows installation, that could be why the PC won't boot without it. You might need to make sure that your new SSD has the EFI partition on it.
You can check this from the Disk Management tool or through the Windows installer. If the SSD doesn’t have an EFI partition, you could create one using the Diskpart tool. I can guide you through that if needed!
Just a heads up, the memory management BSOD isn't necessarily due to the HDD failing unless your page file is stored there. If it is, that would make sense. A possible next step would be to keep the HDD connected when troubleshooting, but focus on creating an EFI on the SSD. After that, the system should ideally recognize the SSD as the main boot drive. Let me know how that pans out!
Yes, definitely check for the EFI partition on your SSD. If you see that the C drive has two partitions, it might already have the EFI partition, which is good. But make sure everything’s in order. If you're confused about the partitions, I can help clarify that part too. Just tell me what you find!
