Struggling to Stay Committed to My Projects, Any Advice?

I'm currently majoring in Computer Science and I often find myself needing to work on personal projects. However, I tend to lose interest quickly, which makes it difficult to stay on track. For example, while I was going through *Crafting Interpreters*, I hit a wall—not because it was too hard, but simply due to a lack of motivation. I also struggle with starting my own projects due to feeling overwhelmed by their size and fearing failure because of my perceived lack of skills. How can I get better at committing to these projects and work on them more consistently? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you're facing a common issue! One key is to break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps. Instead of looking at a whole project as one huge mountain to climb, refocus on completing tiny tasks that you can wrap up in just a couple of hours. Also, try to work on projects that directly benefit you—when the outcome is useful in your life, you'll feel more motivated to see it through. Adopting a 'demo first' approach can help too; get the simplest version up and running first. Remember, it's okay to abandon projects if they aren't working for you—focus on the learning experience, not just the final product!

I went through something similar before, and I found that breaking down big projects into smaller components really helped. It used to feel overwhelming, but now I treat each part as its own mini-project. For example, I've been developing a game engine for a while and I broke it into pieces like a serialization framework and an entity-component system (ECS). While coding, I kept my focus on making each component the best it could be, rather than getting intimidated by the overall goal.

Thanks for sharing that! Did you ever feel like someone else had done what you were trying to do, and that made it seem pointless? What motivated you to keep going despite those thoughts?

All the time! But I reminded myself that it was about my learning journey and personal growth. Plus, everyone has their own take on things, and putting my spin on ideas keeps it exciting.
