Struggling with Dual Monitor Issues in Citrix – Need Help!

I've been dealing with a frustrating monitor issue in our office setup. We have a mix of computers including HP thin clients, HP and Dell workstations, and some new HP Elitedesk mini PCs that we manage with Intune. Our systems run various versions of Windows, and all connect to a Citrix XenApp environment.

The problem arises when users step away from their desks, either locking their computers manually or automatically after a short period. Upon returning, they often find their secondary monitor either black or in standby mode. To get it working again, they have to restart or turn the monitor off and back on, but then Citrix only recognizes one screen, forcing them to manually switch back to dual screens. We've tried numerous troubleshooting steps: updating drivers, BIOS, swapping out cables, and changing computers, but nothing has worked. Interestingly, we noticed this issue mainly occurs with IIyama monitors (the 24" 1080p models), while some users with different setups don't experience it. We've even switched a couple to HP and LG monitors, which seemed to solve the problem for some, but not for all. I'm hesitant to replace all our IIyama monitors since they are otherwise functioning well. Does anyone have suggestions on how to resolve this?

What kind of cable is your second monitor using? I’ve seen issues like this frequently with DisplayPort connections. Swapping to HDMI usually resolves it. Can you remote into the machines when this happens? Sometimes the software still shows the monitor working while the display is down.

Have you looked into the power settings? Setting "Turn off display" to never could help, plus check if the system unattended sleep timeout needs adjusting. There are even registry tweaks you can make to display advanced power options.

Have you checked to see if disabling sleep or hibernation could help? Devices going into sleep mode sometimes leads to these issues. Just a thought, since it seems like your monitors are going into standby.

We’ve confirmed that no devices are set to go into sleep or hibernation. They just go to lock and then eventually to standby, but they don’t wake up without a manual reset, which is super frustrating.

This sounds like a pain! From my experience with HP thin clients in a Citrix setup, it does light a few alarm bells for me regarding Citrix. Have you tried using HP Device Manager for firmware updates? It's important to manage everything through it. I used Easy Shell for a similar setup, and it helped streamline management. You might want to look into that.

Exactly, it's odd how some setups run smoothly while others don't. I've even seen users on similar hardware who experience the same problem randomly. Wish I had a fix!

Yes, we've configured everything through HPDM, and we’re using Easy Shell for initial setups. But the weird part is that it happens across both domain-joined and non-domain machines. Seems like Citrix and IIyama are the common threads, but not everyone with that setup has this issue.
